Where to Stay in Chengdu: Best Neighbourhoods
First-timers should stay around Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road — central, on metro lines 1, 2 and 3, with hotels from ¥300. Boutique courtyards cluster near Kuanzhai Alley (from ¥350), and the cheapest beds sit by Wenshu Monastery (dorms ¥50–100). The panda base is a northeast metro-plus-shuttle ride from anywhere central.
The short answer
Stay inside the First Ring Road and within a short walk of a metro station and Chengdu is easy. The city is flat, the metro covers every sight except the panda base (metro line 3 to Panda Avenue station, then shuttle or taxi), and taxis stay cheap. As a rule of thumb, ¥100 is about AU$21.
Tianfu Square & Chunxi Road — best for first-timers
The city centre: Tianfu Square is the interchange of metro lines 1 and 2, and pedestrianised Chunxi Road a few minutes east adds line 3. Every sight is one or two stops away, the airport metro connects, and the dining choice is overwhelming in both directions of price. International chains and Chinese business hotels run ¥300–700 for a double; hostels hide in the side streets with dorms ¥60–100. It is busy and modern — atmosphere comes from the street life, not the buildings.
Kuanzhai Alley & People’s Park — best for character
West of the centre, the lanes around Kuanzhai Alley hold Chengdu’s boutique tier: restored courtyard townhouses and design hotels from ¥350 up to ¥1,200 for the smarter addresses. People’s Park is next door for morning tea and ear-cleaning, and the metro (line 2/4 corners) keeps you connected. Quieter nights than Chunxi, better mornings.
Wenshu Monastery — best on a budget
The neighbourhood around Wenshu Monastery (line 1, Wenshu Monastery station) is the backpacker and teahouse quarter: dorms ¥50–100, simple doubles ¥150–250, vegetarian restaurants and snack stalls at the monastery gates. Ten minutes by metro to Tianfu Square, and the calmest corner of central Chengdu to come home to.
South Chengdu & the High-Tech Zone — best for long stays
South along line 1, the new districts around the Century City and Financial City stations are where expats and business travellers land: serviced apartments and international hotels ¥400–900, modern malls, and easy airport access. Fine for a long stay; too far from the old town for a short one.
Practical notes
Check the metro map before booking — a hotel 800 metres from a station feels far in the summer humidity. High-speed trains leave from Chengdu East (line 2/7); staying on that axis helps if you are heading to Chongqing or Xi’an next. Chinese hotels must register foreign guests: carry your passport, and if a small guesthouse hesitates to take foreigners, that is the reason.

Chengdu hotels — FAQs
Which area is best for a first visit to Chengdu?
Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road: the metro interchange, the widest choice of hotels and food, and the simplest airport connection. Doubles run ¥300–700.
Do I need to stay near the panda base?
No — the base sits in the northeast suburbs with little else around it. Stay central and ride metro line 3 to Panda Avenue plus the shuttle, or take a Didi (~¥40–60) early to catch the 7.30am opening.
