Osaka Travel Guide: Japan’s kitchen, where eating is the main event

Osaka is Japan’s third-largest city and the commercial centre of the Kansai region, known as “the nation’s kitchen” for its street-food culture. It is famous for Dotonbori’s neon canal, takoyaki and okonomiyaki, Osaka Castle, and the retro Shinsekai district.

Why visit Osaka

Osaka lives by the motto kuidaore — eat until you drop. Japan’s merchant city is brasher, funnier and cheaper than Tokyo, with a street-food culture centred on Dotonbori’s neon canal and a nightlife that runs late. Locals consider it the friendliest big city in the country.

When to visit Osaka

Osaka is a year-round food city, but spring cherry blossom (late March–early April) and autumn foliage (November) are the showstoppers. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold but clear and quieter.

Cherry-blossom season (late March–early April) and November foliage are Osaka’s two peaks — book hotels well ahead. Summer (July–August) is hot and sticky but brings the huge Tenjin Matsuri festival in late July; the June rainy season is the quietest time to visit. Osaka travel questions

What is the best month to visit Osaka?

April and November are the best months to visit Osaka — April for cherry blossom around the castle and November for autumn foliage, both with pleasant 15–22°C days. May and October are excellent too. Avoid August, the hottest and most humid month, unless you come for the Tenjin Matsuri in late July.
