Why visit Hakone
Hakone is the classic mountain-and-hot-spring escape from Tokyo: a loop of ropeways, a pirate-ship cruise across Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji on the horizon, the steaming volcanic valley of Owakudani, and hundreds of onsen ryokan. Ninety minutes from Shinjuku, it’s the easiest way to pair Fuji views with a night in a traditional inn.
When to visit Hakone
Hakone is a year-round onsen town, but Mount Fuji shows itself most in the cold, clear months. Autumn (November) brings fiery maples; spring brings blossom. Summer is warm but Fuji hides in the haze.
Mount Fuji is most visible in the colder, clearer months (roughly October–February) and in the early morning. In summer it’s frequently hidden by haze and cloud — don’t plan the whole trip around the view. Read the full month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Hakone.
