Best Time to Visit Chengdu: Month-by-Month Guide
March–June and September–November are the best times to visit Chengdu — mild 15–25°C days with less rain. Summer is hot, humid and wet; winter is grey but mild. Pandas are most active on cool mornings year-round — go at opening whatever the month.
When is the best time to visit Chengdu?
Chengdu has a mild, humid, famously overcast climate — the saying goes that dogs bark at the sun. The pleasant windows are March–June (blossom, teahouse weather, 15–25°C) and September–November (post-summer clarity, golden ginkgo in November). July–August brings heat, humidity and the heaviest rain. Winter never freezes in the city but is grey and damp.
The pandas do not read the calendar: they are active on any cool morning and sleepy by midday in every season — the base at opening time (7.30am) is the rule that matters, whatever month you visit.
Chengdu’s seasons
Spring (March–May)
The loveliest stretch: parks bloom, teahouses spill outdoors and temperatures climb gently to 25°C. Rain arrives as showers rather than deluges.
Summer (June–August)
Hot (30°C+), humid and wet, with heavy rain spells that can disrupt mountain day trips. The upside: lotus season, cold noodle dishes, and pandas at their silliest in the early-morning cool.
Autumn (September–November)
Skies clear through September; October is mild and pleasant; November turns the city’s ginkgo trees gold — People’s Park and the university campuses are the spots.
Winter (December–February)
Grey and damp but mild (3–10°C). Hotpot season peaks, hotel rates bottom out, and Chinese New Year brings temple fairs and lantern displays.

Dates to watch
Chinese New Year (late January–February) empties the city but fills the temple fairs and the panda base stays open — a fine time if your transport is booked. May Day (1–5 May) and Golden Week (1–7 October) pack the panda base; pre-book entry or arrive at opening. The sugar-wine festival and lantern shows light up February; autumn’s mooncake season is the calm counterpoint.
What to pack
An umbrella year-round — Chengdu’s drizzle is unscripted. Layers for spring and autumn; light breathable clothing plus sun protection for summer; a warm jacket for winter mornings at the panda base (outdoors, damp, cold). Comfortable shoes for park and old-town strolling.

What is the best month to visit Chengdu?
April and May for blossom and teahouse weather, October–November for clear skies and golden ginkgo. Pandas are active on cool mornings in every month — what matters is arriving at the base at opening time.
Does it really rain a lot in Chengdu?
Chengdu is overcast more than rainy — frequent grey skies and drizzle, with heavy rain concentrated in July–August. Pack an umbrella in every season, but expect damp rather than downpours outside summer.
