Malaysia Travel Guide: Truly Asia — three cuisines, two towers and one unbeatable food scene

Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country split between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, famous for Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers, Penang’s George Town heritage streets and street food, and Borneo’s rainforests. Its Malay-Chinese-Indian mix makes it one of Asia’s best food destinations. Rain is possible year-round.

Why visit Malaysia

Malaysia’s tagline “Truly Asia” undersells it: Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures share one table here, producing what many consider the continent’s best everyday food. Kuala Lumpur brings the towers and malls; Penang brings heritage streets and the nation’s food capital; Borneo brings orangutans and world-class diving.

When to visit Malaysia

Malaysia is hot and humid year-round with no true dry season, but rain patterns differ by coast: the west (KL, Penang) is driest December–February, while the east coast shuts down during the November–February monsoon.

The east coast islands (Perhentian, Redang) effectively close November–February; plan islands on the west (Langkawi, Penang) instead. Read the full month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Malaysia.

Malaysia travel questions

What is the best month to visit Malaysia?

January and February are the best months for Kuala Lumpur and Penang — the driest, sunniest stretch on the west coast. For east-coast islands like the Perhentians, visit June to August. Malaysia has no fully dry season, so expect possible afternoon showers any month.
