Chengdu Travel Budget: Daily Costs & Calculator
Chengdu costs roughly ¥200–350 (AU$42–75) per day backpacker-style, ¥500–900 (AU$105–190) mid-range and ¥1,400+ for comfort. Only the panda base (¥55) and Sichuan opera (¥100–200) cost real money; street food keeps meals among China’s cheapest.
How expensive is Chengdu?
Noticeably cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai, especially for eating. The panda base (¥55), opera tickets (¥100–200) and the Leshan or Dujiangyan day trips (~¥80 entry plus rail) are the only structured costs; the rest of the city — parks, monasteries, lanes — is free. As a rule of thumb, ¥100 is about AU$21.

Money tips
Pay by Alipay or WeChat Pay everywhere; keep small cash for stalls. Winter (except Chinese New Year) drops hotel rates 20–30%. The teahouse is the best-value entertainment in China — ¥20 buys an afternoon. Book Leshan rail a day ahead at weekends; and never take a private tour for what a ¥55 ticket and a metro ride deliver.

How much money do I need per day in Chengdu?
Around ¥200–350 (AU$42–75) covers a dorm, street food and the metro; ¥500–900 (AU$105–190) is comfortable mid-range with hotpot nights. Chengdu is one of China’s cheapest big cities.
Is the panda base worth the ticket?
Yes — ¥55 is Chengdu’s best-value sight, provided you arrive at the 7.30am opening when the pandas are active. Everything else iconic in the city (parks, Wenshu, the lanes) is free.
