The shinkansen

Nozomi trains leave Tokyo and Shinagawa every ten minutes and reach Shin-Osaka in two and a half hours. The Hikari (JR Pass valid, supplement for Nozomi) adds about 20 minutes. From Shin-Osaka, the Midosuji subway reaches Namba in 15 minutes and Umeda in 5 — factor that into any comparison with flights, which land you at Itami or Kansai, both 30–50 minutes from the centre. Book via SmartEX or at station machines; the fare is the same.

Flights and buses

Low-cost carriers (Peach, Jetstar Japan) fly Haneda/Narita to Kansai from around 6,000 yen one way with advance fares — competitive on price, but once you add 45 minutes each way to the airport plus check-in, the train usually wins door to door and always wins on comfort. Overnight buses from Shinjuku and Tokyo station (8–9 hours, 5,000–9,000 yen) remain the genuine budget play, especially at holiday weekends when last-minute shinkansen seats sell out.

Our take

For most travellers the Nozomi is the answer: city-centre to city-centre, no check-in, no weather cancellations worth mentioning. Fly only if a sale fare undercuts the train by half and you are travelling light. Stringing Tokyo–Osaka–Hiroshima together? Price the 7-day JR Pass (from 50,000 yen) first. Our Osaka guide picks up from the station.
