Osaka to Hiroshima: Shinkansen, Bus and Adding Miyajima
The best way from Osaka to Hiroshima is the Sakura or Nozomi shinkansen from Shin-Osaka: about 1 hour 25 minutes, roughly 11,000 yen (~A$110). Highway buses take 4.5–5 hours and cost around 4,000 yen. Miyajima island is 30 minutes past Hiroshima by JR train plus ferry.
The options at a glance
| Shinkansen (Sakura/Nozomi) | ~1h 25m · ~11,000 yen (~A$110) · from Shin-Osaka |
|---|---|
| Highway bus | 4.5–5 h · ~4,000 yen (~A$40) · daytime and overnight |
| Miyajima add-on | +30 min JR to Miyajimaguchi · 10-min ferry (JR Pass covers both) |
The shinkansen
Sakura and Nozomi trains leave Shin-Osaka every 15–30 minutes; the Mizuho is fastest but not JR Pass-eligible. With a pass, take the Sakura or Hikari (pass holders pay a supplement for Nozomi). Hiroshima station is a 15-minute tram or bus ride from the Peace Memorial Park — or take the tourist loop bus from the station, free with a JR Pass. Seats on the right-hand side give Inland Sea glimpses west of Okayama.
What to do with the day
Hiroshima works as a long day trip: Peace Memorial Park and museum in the morning (museum entry ~200 yen, allow two hours), okonomiyaki lunch in the city, then JR to Miyajimaguchi (30 minutes, ~420 yen, pass-valid) and the ferry to Miyajima for the floating torii and Daisho-in temple. The last useful ferries back run to early evening — check tide tables if the floating effect matters: the gate floats at high tide and stands on sand at low tide.
The bus alternative
Highway buses from Osaka (Umeda/Namba) to Hiroshima station take 4.5–5 hours for around 4,000 yen — less than half the rail fare, and overnight departures save a hotel night. Worth it for slow travel budgets; a false economy on a short trip.
Our take
This leg is where a 7-day JR Pass starts to pay for itself: Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima return exceeds the 50,000 yen pass price. Without a pass, the Sakura is still the right call — the bus saves 7,000 yen but costs you half a day each way.
