Where to Stay in Xi'an: Best Areas & Hotels

Stay inside the city wall near the Bell Tower for the classic Xi’an experience — the Muslim Quarter, both towers and the wall’s south gate are walkable, on metro line 2. Yongningmen suits boutique stays; Dayanta (Big Wild Goose Pagoda) is the quiet alternative south of the wall.

Xi’an’s best areas at a glance

Xi’an is compact: almost everything sits inside or just outside the Ming wall, so location choices are about atmosphere more than logistics. Prices are typical mid-season double-room ranges; ¥100 is about AU$21.

Bell Tower area (inside the wall) — best for first-timers

The dead centre of the old city: the Muslim Quarter’s food lanes are five minutes west, the Drum Tower next door, and metro lines 2 and 6 cross beneath. Every price band is here — hostels (dorms ¥60–110), mid-range chains (¥300–600) and heritage-styled five-stars (¥800–1,500).

Yongningmen (South Gate) — best for boutique charm

At the wall’s grandest gate, small design hotels and courtyard guesthouses (¥400–900) mix with wine bars and cafés along the moat. Evening wall walks start at your doorstep.

Dayanta & Qujiang — best for calm

South of the wall around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda: wider streets, the evening fountain show, the Shaanxi History Museum next door and solid mid-to-upper hotels (¥350–800). Slightly further from the food lanes but on metro lines 3 and 4.

Near Xi’an North station — best for rail connections

If you are chaining high-speed trains (Beijing, Chengdu, the Silk Road west), the north-station area’s business hotels (¥300–550) make early departures painless. It is 40 minutes from the sights by metro line 2 — stay one night, not your whole trip.

Booking tips

Confirm foreign-passport acceptance when booking (platforms filter for it). Prices spike at Golden Week and May Day — the Terracotta Army’s visitor caps make those weeks doubly crowded. Courtyard hotels inside the wall often have stairs only; ask about ground-floor rooms if that matters. In winter, check that smaller guesthouses have proper heating — most do, but bathrooms can be chilly.
