Best Time to Visit Xi'an: Month-by-Month Guide
September–October and April–May are the best times to visit Xi’an — mild 15–27°C days, clear skies and comfortable cycling weather on the city wall. July–August is hot and dusty; winter is cold but dry, quiet and cheap.
When is the best time to visit Xi’an?
Xi’an sits on the edge of the loess plateau with a continental climate: hot summers, freezing winters, and two glorious shoulders. September–October is the prime window — clear skies, 15–26°C days and harvest colour on the surrounding hills (skip the 1–7 October Golden Week). April–May is nearly as good, with blossom along the city wall moat. The Terracotta Army is indoors, so even bad-weather months work if the wall and pagoda plazas are not your priority.
Xi’an’s seasons
Spring (March–May)
Warming from 5°C to 27°C with blossom in the parks and along the wall. Dust days occasionally blow through in March; by May the weather is as good as it gets.
Summer (June–August)
Hot and dusty, with July highs above 32°C. Plan the warriors and museums for midday and the wall for early morning or sunset. Short storms arrive late summer.
Autumn (September–November)
The finest season: mild, dry and clear, with pomegranate harvest in Lintong (the Terracotta Army district). November turns cold but stays bright and quiet.
Winter (December–February)
Cold (−5–5°C) but dry and often sunny. Hotels drop 30–40%, the Muslim Quarter steams invitingly, and Chinese New Year brings lantern fairs to the wall itself.

Dates to watch
Chinese New Year (late January–February) fills the city wall with a lantern festival — worth seeing, but intercity transport sells out. May Day (around 1–5 May) and National Day Golden Week (1–7 October) pack the Terracotta Army to capacity; book tickets and hotels weeks ahead or shift your dates. The Mid-Autumn Festival (September–October) is a calm, pretty time for evening wall walks.
What to pack
Layers for spring and autumn, a hat and serious sun protection for summer (the wall has no shade), and a proper down jacket plus gloves for winter. Year-round: comfortable shoes — the wall loop is 14km and the warriors complex sprawls.

What is the best month to visit Xi’an?
September — mild 15–26°C days, clear skies and harvest season in the surrounding hills. October is equally lovely after Golden Week ends on 7 October; April–May is the best spring window.
Can you visit the Terracotta Army in winter?
Yes — the pits are indoors and open year-round, and winter brings the smallest crowds. Pair it with the Muslim Quarter’s steaming food lanes and you have a great cold-weather day; save the city wall for a clear afternoon.
