Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: Shuttle, Cruise Transfer or Bus
The expressway cut the journey to about 2.5 hours. Easiest: a limousine van from the Old Quarter (US$10–15 / ~A$15–23) or your cruise's own shuttle. Cheapest: public buses to Ha Long city or Bai Chay (~120,000–200,000 VND). There is no useful train. Most cruises depart around midday — leave Hanoi by 8–9 am.
The options at a glance
| Limousine van | ~2.5 h · US$10–15 (~A$15–23) · hotel pick-up in the Old Quarter |
|---|---|
| Cruise shuttle | ~2.5 h · US$20–35 return · timed to your boat’s check-in |
| Public bus | 3–4 h · ~120,000–200,000 VND (~A$7–12) · to Bai Chay / Ha Long city |
If you have a cruise booked
Overnight cruises (from ~US$100 per person mid-range) leave from Tuan Chau or Got pier around 12:00–12:30 and do not wait. Book the cruise company’s shuttle when you book the cabin — it costs more than a public van but is timed to check-in and drops you at the right pier. Independent limousine vans arrive in the Ha Long city area, not necessarily at your pier; allow a 10-minute taxi hop at the end.
Going independently
Limousine vans (9-seat) run all day from the Old Quarter and Noi Bai airport to Bai Chay — book a day ahead through your hotel. Public buses leave My Dinh and Gia Lam stations for Ha Long city roughly hourly; they are cheaper but slower and drop you a taxi ride from the piers. If you are day-tripping rather than cruising, an organised day trip (van + 4–6-hour bay cruise, ~US$45–70) is better value than assembling it yourself.
The Cat Ba alternative
Cat Ba island, reached via Hai Phong (train or van + ferry, ~3.5 h total), offers the same karst seascape with fewer boats and a backpacker scene. Cruises into Lan Ha bay leave from Cat Ba town. It suits independent travellers; first-timers with two days should stick with the classic Ha Long overnight cruise.
Our take
Book the overnight cruise and take its shuttle — the bay is at its best at dawn, which day trips never see. October–November and March–April give the clearest skies; summer is hot and occasionally stormy enough to cancel sailings. Fits neatly into our Vietnam 10-day itinerary.
