Best Day Trips from Hanoi
The best day trips from Hanoi are Ha Long Bay (2.5–3.5 hours by expressway shuttle, day cruises from ~US$35–50), Ninh Binh’s Trang An and Tam Coc boat rides (2 hours), the Perfume Pagoda (2 hours plus a boat ride) and Bat Trang pottery village (30 minutes).
The short list
Hanoi’s escapes fall into two kinds: water and craft. Ha Long Bay is the famous one — karst islands from a day boat. Ninh Binh offers the same scenery on rivers instead of sea, and it is closer. The Perfume Pagoda is the pilgrimage day, reached by rowboat, and Bat Trang is the pottery village on the city’s edge.
Karst country
Ha Long Bay
The expressway has cut the drive to 2.5–3.5 hours each way. Day cruises (typically 4–6 hours on the water, from ~US$35–50 / ~A$53–76 including transfers) cover the Sung Sot cave, a lagoon and a viewpoint island. A day trip shows you the postcard views; an overnight boat reaches the quieter corners of Bai Tu Long. Book through your hotel and read recent reviews — quality varies enormously at the budget end.
Ninh Binh
Two hours south by limousine van (~250,000 VND / ~A$15) or train. Trang An’s rowboats thread through caves and karst valleys (~250,000 VND); Tam Coc is the older, prettier-in-rice-season alternative (from ~195,000 VND). Add the Mua Cave viewpoint — 500 steps to the dragon-topped ridge — and the Bich Dong pagoda. This is many travellers’ favourite day out of Hanoi.
Pagodas and pottery
Perfume Pagoda
Sixty kilometres south-west: a 1.5-hour rowboat ride up the Yen stream, then a climb (or cable car, ~100,000 VND each way) to the Huong Tich cave shrine. February–March’s festival season packs it; the rest of the year it is a serene river-and-cave day. Tours run ~700,000–900,000 VND (~A$42–54).
Bat Trang
The ceramics village sits 14 km from the centre — a 30-minute ride on bus 47 from the Opera House area (~9,000 VND) or a cheap Grab. Walk the old kiln lanes, paint your own bowl in a workshop (~50,000–100,000 VND) and browse the riverside market. A relaxed half-day.
How to plan
Ha Long Bay and the Perfume Pagoda are simplest as organised day tours booked through your Old Quarter hotel; Ninh Binh works independently by van plus a rented bicycle, and Bat Trang is pure DIY. If Sapa is on your list, treat it as an overnight (sleeper train or five-hour bus) — it is not a day trip. In the June–August wet season, keep Ha Long flexible: storms cancel cruises with a day’s notice.

Hanoi day trips — FAQs
Can you do Ha Long Bay in one day from Hanoi?
Yes — expressway shuttles take 2.5–3.5 hours each way and day cruises put 4–6 hours on the water. It is a long day; an overnight cruise is better if you have the time, but the day trip covers the headline sights.
Is Ninh Binh better than Ha Long Bay?
Different, not better. Ninh Binh rows you through karst rivers and rice fields two hours from Hanoi, and it is far cheaper. Ha Long has the scale and the seascapes. Many travellers do both — Ninh Binh independently, Ha Long on a cruise.
What is the easiest half-day trip from Hanoi?
Bat Trang pottery village: 30 minutes by bus 47 or Grab, with kiln lanes, paint-your-own workshops and a riverside market. No tour needed and you are back for lunch in the Old Quarter.
