Hanoi to Sapa: Overnight Train or Limousine Van

Two sensible options: the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (about 8 hours, soft sleeper US$25–40 / ~A$38–60) then a 1-hour bus up to Sapa town — or a direct limousine van (about 5 hours, US$15–18 / ~A$23–27) that drops you in central Sapa. The van is faster and cheaper; the train is the experience.

The options at a glance

Limousine van~5 h door to door · US$15–18 (~A$23–27) · 9-seat vans, hotel pick-up
Sleeper bus5.5–6 h · US$10–14 (~A$15–21) · cheapest, least restful

The overnight train

Trains leave Hanoi station around 9–10 pm and reach Lao Cai, on the Chinese border, by 5–6 am. From there, public buses and minivans climb the final 38 km to Sapa town in about an hour (~50,000–100,000 VND). Book a soft-sleeper berth in a 4-berth cabin; the cheapest hard sleepers are fine only for the very tolerant. Private-carriage operators attach upgraded cabins to the same trains at roughly double the fare — nicer bedding, same journey. Book a week ahead in the October–November and March–April trekking seasons.

The limousine van

Nine-seat converted vans run the Hanoi–Noi Bai airport–Sapa corridor all day on the motorway, taking about five hours including a rest stop, with hotel pick-up in the Old Quarter. At US$15–18 they are faster than the train door to door and drop you in central Sapa — the pragmatic choice, especially on the return leg when you want a daytime departure. Motion sickness sufferers should note the final hour winds uphill.

When to go

Rice terraces are greenest June to early September and turn gold for harvest from late September into October — the most photogenic window. December to February is cold (occasionally near freezing at night) with misty views; pack a warm layer whatever the Hanoi forecast says.

Our take

Take the train up and the van back: you get the sleeper experience outbound and a fast, daylight return. Two nights in Sapa is the sweet spot — one for the town and Cat Cat village, one for a longer trek or the Fansipan cable car. Our 3-day Hanoi itinerary fits neatly around it.

Hanoi to Sapa — FAQs

How do I get from Hanoi to Sapa?

Either an overnight train to Lao Cai (8 hours, soft sleeper US$25–40) plus a 1-hour bus up to Sapa town, or a direct limousine van from Hanoi in about 5 hours (US$15–18).

Is the Hanoi to Sapa train worth it?

Yes if you value the experience — a berth replaces a hotel night and arrives at dawn. The limousine van is faster door to door and cheaper, so time-poor travellers should take it.

When is the best time to visit Sapa?

Late September to October for golden harvest terraces, June to early September for deep green fields. Winter (December–February) is cold and misty; March–April is clear and mild.
