Phuket or Krabi: Which Beach Base to Pick
Short answer: Phuket for choice — more resorts, more restaurants, nightlife, direct international flights. Krabi (Ao Nang and Railay) for scenery — the limestone cliffs are more dramatic — and a lower-key, slightly cheaper stay. They are two to three hours apart by road or ferry, so combining both in one trip is easy.
At a glance
| Vibe | Phuket: developed, resort-scale, lively · Krabi: lower-key, scenery-first |
|---|---|
| Beaches | Phuket: long swimmable west-coast beaches · Krabi: Railay’s cliff coves (boat access) |
| Costs | Krabi runs roughly 10–20% cheaper for hotels and food |
| Nightlife | Phuket (Patong) vs Krabi’s modest bar strips |
| Flights | Phuket: many direct internationals · Krabi: fewer, often via Bangkok |
Beaches and scenery
Krabi wins the postcard contest. Railay — reachable only by longtail boat (200 THB each way from Ao Nang) — stacks cliff walls against white sand, and the viewpoints and lagoon hikes reward effort. Ao Nang’s own beach is ordinary; you boat out daily. Phuket answers with convenience: Kata, Karon and Bang Tao are walk-out-of-your-hotel swimming beaches, and the island’s interior has viewpoints, a Big Buddha and an old town with Sino-Portuguese shophouses worth an afternoon.
Things to do
Both run the same greatest hits: Phi Phi day trips (from ~1,500–2,500 THB), four-island or Hong island tours (~1,200–1,800 THB), snorkelling, kayaking. Krabi adds rock climbing on Railay’s cliffs — beginner half-days from ~1,000 THB — and mangrove kayaking. Phuket adds the bigger evening economy: shows, night markets and Patong’s strip. Divers note the Similan islands liveaboards mostly depart from Khao Lak, north of Phuket, November–April.
Costs and logistics
Krabi is gentler on the wallet: Ao Nang mid-range rooms and meals run a tenth to a fifth below Patong or Kata equivalents. Phuket’s airport, though, is a genuine advantage — direct flights from Australia and across Asia, no Bangkok transit needed (see Bangkok to Phuket). Between the two: ferries and speedboats (~1.5–2.5 h, ~500–1,000 THB) or a three-hour minivan (~300–400 THB). Details in getting around Phuket and getting around Krabi.
The verdict
First Thailand beach trip, travelling with mixed ages, want everything easy: Phuket. Scenery-driven, climbing or kayaking, quieter evenings: Krabi. A week or more? Split it — 3–4 nights each, ferry between. See the Phuket itinerary and Krabi itinerary.
