Flying — the default answer
This is one of the busiest domestic routes in Asia, and competition keeps fares low. Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and VietJet Thailand fly from both Bangkok airports, with advance fares from around 1,000 THB plus bags. Book two to four weeks out for the best prices; December to February weekends sell out. Phuket airport is in the island’s north — allow 45–90 minutes to Patong, Kata or Karon by shared minivan (from ~200 THB) or taxi (~800–1,000 THB). Details in our getting around Phuket guide.
The overnight bus
VIP 24-seat buses leave the southern bus terminal (Sai Tai Mai) around 6–8 pm and reach Phuket town by 6–8 am. At 700–1,100 THB they undercut peak-season flights, and the reclining seats are genuinely wide. The catch: you arrive at the Phuket Town terminal, still 30–60 minutes from the west-coast beaches. Fine for budget travellers comfortable sleeping on wheels.
What about the train?
Phuket has no railway. The romantic option is the overnight sleeper to Surat Thani (about 8–9 hours, 2nd-class AC berth ~800–1,200 THB) followed by a 4–5 hour bus across to Phuket. It costs about the same as a flight and takes all day — choose it for the journey, not the savings. Combined train+bus tickets are sold through the state railway.
Our take
Fly. On a route this competitive, the bus only wins when flights spike above ~2,500 THB at holiday weekends. Once you land, our 3-day Phuket itinerary and Krabi guide (an easy ferry hop away) take over.
