Kyoto to Nara: JR or Kintetsu

Two direct lines. JR Miyakoji rapid: Kyoto station to JR Nara in 45 minutes, 720 yen — JR Pass valid. Kintetsu limited express: Kyoto station to Kintetsu-Nara in 35 minutes, 1,280 yen reserved — arrives closer to Nara Park. A cheap Kintetsu express (760 yen, ~45 min) splits the difference.

The options at a glance

JR Miyakoji rapid~45 min · 720 yen (~A$7.20) · Kyoto stn → JR Nara · JR Pass OK
Kintetsu limited express~35 min · 1,280 yen (~A$12.80) · Kyoto stn → Kintetsu-Nara · reserved
Kintetsu express~45 min · 760 yen (~A$7.60) · no reservation needed

Stations and strategy

Both lines leave from Kyoto station — JR from the main concourse, Kintetsu from its own gates on the south side. At the Nara end, Kintetsu-Nara is five minutes’ walk from the park and the first deer; JR Nara is 20 minutes out (or 100 yen on the loop bus). The trade: Kintetsu’s limited express is fastest and best-placed but needs a reserved-seat supplement; the JR rapid is free with a pass. The unreserved Kintetsu express is the quiet winner for everyone else — near-JR price, near-park station.

How much time Nara needs

Four to six hours covers the essentials from Kyoto: Kofuku-ji, the deer park (crackers 200 yen), Todai-ji’s Great Buddha (600 yen) and Kasuga Taisha. Leave Kyoto by 8:30 am and you beat the crowds to the Buddha hall. Naramachi’s old streets or Isui-en garden stretch it to a full day. Deer bow for crackers — and mob the slow-handed, so keep the bundle hidden until you are ready.

Our take

Doing Kyoto–Nara–Osaka in one day? Kintetsu’s line runs Kyoto–Nara–Osaka-Namba, so you can do Nara as a stopover between cities — coin lockers at Kintetsu-Nara take suitcases. See Kyoto to Osaka and Osaka to Nara for the other legs, and the Nara guide for the sights themselves.
