Your 3 days in Nara, day by day

Day 1 — The Great Buddha & the Deer

Morning: Arrive from Kyoto or Osaka, drop bags, straight to Todai-ji for the Great Buddha

Afternoon: Nara Park deer, then the lantern path to Kasuga Taisha

Evening: Kakinoha-zushi dinner and a quiet walk past lit temple gates

Day 2 — Pagoda, Garden & Old Town

Morning: Kofuku-ji pagoda and National Treasure Museum, Sarusawa Pond

Afternoon: Isuien Garden, then the machiya lanes and craft shops of Naramachi

Evening: Mochi at Nakatanidou, sake tasting in a Naramachi brewery

Day 3 — Dawn Park & Onward

Morning: Sunrise with the deer in an empty Nara Park

Afternoon: Horyu-ji (world’s oldest wooden buildings) if time allows

Evening: Train onward to Osaka, Koyasan or back to Kyoto
