Best Time to Visit Shanghai: Month-by-Month Guide
October and November are the best months to visit Shanghai — mild 16–23°C days, low rain and golden plane trees — with March–April nearly as good. Avoid the June plum rains and the hot, sticky typhoon season of July–August.
When is the best time to visit Shanghai?
Shanghai is a humid subtropical city, and comfort hinges on dodging two things: summer’s heat and the June rains. Mid-October to late November is the sweet spot — dry, mild and clear, with the French Concession’s plane trees turning gold. March–May brings blossom and warm days, though showers build toward June. The city is genuinely year-round — it is mostly an indoor-outdoor mix of museums, galleries, restaurants and walkable neighbourhoods — but July and August test your enthusiasm at 35°C with tropical humidity.
Shanghai’s seasons
Spring (March–May)
Magnolias and cherry blossom in the parks, warm 13–25°C days, and rain that arrives politely rather than all at once. The best season for the water towns before the summer crowds.
Summer (June–August)
June is the plum-rain month — weeks of warm drizzle. July and August are fiercely hot and sticky, with typhoons occasionally brushing the coast (flights and trains occasionally delayed). Sightsee at dawn, retreat to malls and museums at midday.
Autumn (September–November)
The heat breaks in late September; October–November is the finest stretch of the year — dry air, golden light and festival season. Book Golden Week (1–7 October) carefully or avoid it.
Winter (December–February)
Grey, damp and 2–8°C, feeling colder indoors since many older buildings lack central heating. The upside: empty museums, discounted hotels and festive lights; Chinese New Year quietens the city beautifully.
Shanghai month by month
Damp and grey, 2–8°C; indoor museum days
Chinese New Year lull; chilly, quiet streets
Warming, blossoms begin; showers increase
Mild 13–21°C; parks and lanes at their best
Warm and bright before the rains; avoid May Day
Plum-rain season: sticky, daily showers
Peak heat 35°C; sauna conditions
Hottest month; typhoon brushes possible
Heat breaks late month; skies clear
Golden month: 16–23°C, dry, festivals
Crisp and calm; plane trees turn gold
Cold, damp; festive lights, low rates
Typhoons, rain and practical notes
Typhoon season runs July–September; direct hits on Shanghai are rare but transport wobbles happen — keep a buffer day in summer itineraries. Rain is possible every month, so a compact umbrella is permanent kit. Whatever the season, the Bund is best at dawn (local life, no crowds) and after dark (both banks lit); midday is its least interesting hour.

What is the best month to visit Shanghai?
October — mild 16–23°C days, the least rain and golden plane trees in the French Concession. November is nearly as good and quieter. For spring, aim for April.
Does Shanghai get typhoons?
Occasionally, between July and September. Direct hits are rare but flights and trains can be disrupted for a day. If travelling in summer, keep one flexible buffer day and check forecasts before water-town day trips.
