Best Time to Visit Beijing: Month-by-Month Guide
September and October are the best months to visit Beijing — crisp 15–26°C days, clear skies and golden ginkgo trees — with April and May a close second. July and August are hot and stormy; winter is freezing but sunny, cheap and crowd-free.
When is the best time to visit Beijing?
Beijing has four sharply defined seasons, and two of them are made for sightseeing. Mid-September to late October delivers the year’s best conditions: dry air, blue skies and daytime temperatures of 15–26°C — ideal for the Great Wall, where the ridgelines turn red and gold. April–May runs it close with blossom and warm 10–25°C days. Skip the 1–7 October Golden Week if you dislike queues.
Beijing’s seasons
Spring (March–May)
Warming fast from 5°C to 25°C. Parks fill with magnolia, cherry and peach blossom. Occasional sandstorms blow in from the Gobi in March–April — check forecasts and keep a light mask handy.
Summer (June–August)
Hot and humid, with July highs around 32°C and most of the year’s rain falling in short, violent bursts. Sightsee early, nap at midday, and use the air-conditioned museums well.
Autumn (September–November)
The prime season. September is warm and clear; October is crisp with superb visibility; November turns cold but stays dry, and hotel prices drop accordingly.
Winter (December–February)
Dry, sunny and properly cold — January sees −10°C nights. The reward: empty palaces, the cheapest rates of the year, ice skating on Houhai, and the Spring Festival temple fairs in late January or February.

Dates to watch
Chinese New Year (late January–February) empties the city as residents head home — temple fairs at Ditan and Longtan parks are the highlight, but intercity transport sells out. The May Day holiday (around 1–5 May) and National Day Golden Week (1–7 October) pack every sight; the Forbidden City sells out days ahead in those weeks. Mid-Autumn Festival (September–October) brings mooncakes and full-moon park strolls.
What to pack
Spring and autumn need layers over T-shirts; add a windproof jacket for the Wall. Summer demands breathable clothing, sun protection and an umbrella. Winter means a proper down coat, thermals, hat and lip balm — Beijing’s dry cold cracks skin fast. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable year-round: the Forbidden City alone is a 3–4km walk.

What is the best month to visit Beijing?
September is the single best month: warm 15–26°C days, low rain, clear skies and the summer crowds gone. October is equally beautiful but avoid the 1–7 October Golden Week. May is the best spring alternative.
Is Beijing worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you dress for it. Winter brings the year’s clearest skies, empty Forbidden City courtyards, the lowest hotel rates and Houhai ice skating — just expect −10°C nights in January.
