Seoul to Busan: KTX, Slow Train or Bus

The KTX high-speed train is the way: Seoul station to Busan station in 2 hours 15–40 minutes, about 59,800 won (~A$63) in standard class. The slower ITX-Saemaeul takes about 4.5 hours for ~42,600 won. Express buses run about 4 hours from ~25,000 won. Flying rarely makes sense once airport time is counted.

The KTX in practice

Trains run every 15–30 minutes from Seoul station, most via Daejeon and Daegu. The non-stop and short-stop services do the run in about 2 hours 15 minutes. Book on the Korail app or website up to a month out; Friday evening and Sunday afternoon trains sell out, and standing tickets are the miserable fallback. First class adds about 25,000 won for a wider seat and a snack. Busan station sits right on subway line 1 — 20 minutes to Nampo-dong, about 50 to Haeundae beach with one change. Rail passes

The KR Pass (Korea Rail Pass) for foreign visitors covers unlimited KTX rides over 2, 3, 4 or 5 consecutive or flexible days. A Seoul–Busan round trip alone roughly matches the 2-day pass price, so the pass pays off if you add Gyeongju or Jeonju. Children and youth get discounts.

Slower and cheaper

The ITX-Saemaeul is the middle option — reserved seats, half the speed, 30% cheaper. The Mugunghwa is slower still and mainly for rail fans. Express buses leave Seoul’s Gyeongbu terminal every 20 minutes or so for around 25,000–35,000 won depending on comfort class; the premium buses have three-across seating and are decent for an overnight-ish ride, though there is little scenery at night anyway.

Our take

Book the KTX and spend the saving in time: two extra hours in Busan beats 20,000 won in your pocket. Busan rewards at least two nights — pair it with our Busan highlights and a day in nearby Gyeongju, 30 minutes away by train.
