Bali or Thailand: Which Should You Visit?

Short answer: Thailand for variety and value — islands, Bangkok, the north — with better tourist infrastructure. Bali for a compact, one-base trip — surf, rice terraces, villa life — and the easiest flight from Australia. Both are cheap by Australian standards; Bali is slightly cheaper on the ground, Thailand cheaper to fly between regions.

The beach question

Thailand wins for classic postcard beaches — Railay, the Phi Phis, Koh Lanta — with calmer, clearer swimming water. Bali’s south coast is surf country: great waves, strong currents, black or golden sand, cliff-top views at Uluwatu. If swimming with kids is the priority, pick Thailand’s Andaman coast in the dry season. If surf or beach clubs are the priority, Bali.

Culture and things to do

Bali compresses a lot into one island: Hindu temples, rice terraces, volcano sunrises, a serious yoga and wellness scene around Ubud. Thailand spreads it out: Bangkok’s temples and street food, Chiang Mai’s old city and mountains, the islands. Thailand rewards two or three stops; Bali rewards staying put and hiring a driver. Costs and logistics

On the ground they are close: a massage runs ~150,000 IDR (~A$14) in Bali and ~300–400 THB (~A$14–18) in Thailand; a local meal is A$3–5 in both. Villas with pools are Bali’s signature value — often cheaper per person than hotel rooms for a group. Thailand’s edge is transport: domestic flights between regions from ~1,000 THB make multi-stop trips cheap, while Bali traffic makes even short hops slow. Australians get visa-free Thailand entry (60 days); Bali needs a paid visa on arrival (~500,000 IDR) or e-VOA.

The verdict

A week or less, flying from Australia, want villa-and-Ubud simplicity: Bali. Ten days or more, want temples plus islands plus a food capital: Thailand. Doing both in one trip is easy — direct Bali–Bangkok flights run about 4.5 hours. More in our Bali guide and Thailand guide.
